Kat Fon is an award winning design educator who has been teaching in Los Angeles for over 10 years. She encourages students to actively participate—rather than passively learn—both in the classroom and in the world. She focuses on creating a secure, analytical environment where students can risk success and failure. She possesses a strong interest in contemporary design issues such as; design theory, social responsibility in design, interdisciplinary influence on design and user experience related to narratives.
Kat is also actively involved in the greater design community through her work with AIGA, Los Angeles—as seen in her role as Chair of the AIGA Los Angeles education committee 2011-2012. She is also credited with creating StimuLatté: coffee and conversation, and Notes from the Trenches, two long running successful series focused on preparing design students for the work world. Kat is motivated daily by the belief that she can influence a positive change in the lives of students through interaction and expectation both in the classroom, on campus, and in the world.
Kat cultivates her abilities in multiple aspects of design and design education. Continuing her education through attending workshops, conferences, and classes that relate to her fields of interest.
She is a total design geek for interactive media, typography, color theory and other design related curiosities. For example she loves to play typography gaming apps with her 10 year old daughter, and is proud of her collection of pop-up books.
